Wilbur (Bill) Sheets, age 102, of Plymouth, MN. died Saturday, August 28, 2021. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a man of faith who possessed insight, wisdom, remarkable listening skills and steadfast integrity in both his public and personal life.
Bill was born October 12, 1918 in Dickey, ND to Freeman and Clara (Burger) Sheets. He graduated North High School in 1936 and entered the army as a Private in February, 1941. He received his commission from OCS, Fort Benning, Georgia in 1942. Bill married Lucille Flanders on May 20, 1943, while assigned to the Infantry Training Center at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. In February, 1944, Bill was assigned to the 10 th Mountain Division, Camp Hale, Colorado. He was a proud veteran serving his country as an Infantry Officer with the lauded 10 th Mountain Division, United States Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster for his distinguished service and courageous efforts in the liberation of Italy.
Bill was a successful entrepreneur who never forgot his humble beginnings or how much it meant to be helped in time of need. Upon discharge from the Army, Bill joined Gordan-Stephans Wholesale Grocery as an Advertising Manager. In 1948, Bill and business partner, Ken Johnson, launched their own retail grocery business in Minnetonka, known as Kenbill’s. They later moved to Plymouth where the business was known as KenBill’s Food Village IGA, then Humpty Dumpty IGA. Later, Bill and Lucille moved to Frederick, WI where he owned an IGA grocery store affiliated with Sun Mart.
Bill enjoyed following his beloved Twins, his not-so-beloved Vikings, reading, traveling and sipping a dirty vodka martini on the rocks. He was a charter member and past Vice President of Wayzata Toastmasters Club; charter member of Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department and board member of Sagamore Condominiums. Bill was an active member of St Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, Plymouth and Cornerstone Church, Crystal.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Merle Smith and Harold Sheets; his wife of 58 years and mother of his children, Lucille Flanders Sheets; his second wife, Helen Loge Sheets and daughter, Suzanne Goodwin.
Bill will be deeply missed by his children Lynne Flanders (David Ebinger), Patricia McNea, Mark (Lynn) Sheets, Lisa Sheets, Mary Sheets (Randy Pray); son-in-law, Dave Goodwin; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister Audrey Elliot and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapel in Robbinsdale on Wednesday, Nov 3 rd at 11:30. Interment, with Military Honors following the service at Fort Snelling.
