Walter George Hreno passed away on April 13, 2025, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, at the age of 85, surrounded by his family.
Born on May 4, 1939, in Winnipeg Manitoba, Walter was the son of Mike and Barbara Hreno. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Plovie (Gordon), and his brothers John and Mike Hreno.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Hreno; his children David Hreno (Kristin), Deb Hanson, and Patti Hreno Farmakes; and his cherished grandchildren Jack and Luke Hanson (Son-in-law JT Hanson), David and Kyle Farmakes (Son-in-law John Farmakes), Carter Hreno, Madison Bewer, and Sister-in-law Carole Hreno. Additionally by numerous nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors.
Walter made his way to Minneapolis by following his beloved wife, Diane, to the area where they decided to settle and raise a family. They were married for 61 years!
Walter pursued higher education at United College-Winnipeg and at the MN School of Business. He also then earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. Over the course of his career, he contributed to several organizations including Manitoba Forestry, Radisson Hotel, Nash Finch Company, and Mystic Lake Casino.
In addition to his professional life, Walter gave generously of his time as a volunteer with St. Louis Park youth baseball and hockey programs. His commitment to community involvement left a lasting impression on many young athletes and their families. He forged many long lasting friendships over the years through his volunteerism, neighborhood involvement and career.
Walter's legacy lives on through the family he loved deeply and the community he served faithfully. May his memory and numerous stories bring comfort to those who knew him. We know he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor and his ability to be a 'jack of all trades.' He was loved and admired by all that knew him.
Visitation service will be held Wednesday, April 23rd at Gearty Delmore Park Chapel, 3960 Wooddale Ave. South from 5:00-7:30 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, April 24th at 11AM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 145 Jersey Ave. So., Golden Valley MN, with visitation from 10-11 AM.
In lieu of flowers: donations can be made in Walt's memory to St. Jude's or Ronald McDonald House
