Mrs. Virginia Thiel, age 97, passed away peaceably in the Lord’s hands surrounded by loved ones in her home at The Glenn in Hopkins where she was receiving hospice care.
Her life began in earnest as the 15th child to be born to her parents, Philomena and Caspar Westemeier near Dyersville, Iowa on Feb 9th, 1923. The first year of Virginia’s life was a tragic one for her mother, Philomena. Due to several health complications and confining her to hospitals much of the time, she finally succumbed and died on Christmas Day, 1923. It was a rough beginning for Virginia, not having a mother and being raised by her sisters. Their farm was also lost during the Depression. Despite the suffering there were happy times too, for she was special in the eyes of her father, Caspar. One of those happy times is when she met and later married Leonard J. Thiel Sept. 2nd, 1944. They went on to raise 7 children, Janet, Leonard, Michael, Cheryl, Mark, William and Robert. Out of those came 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and I great, great grandson.
She will most fondly be remembered for the love she had for all her children and grandchildren, along with her deep abiding faith, praying every day.
In celebration of the passing into her new life will be Mass at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 16th at the Church of the Holy Family, 5900 W Lake St. Because of COVID 19 restrictions not everyone will be able to attend. But live streaming will be available through the Holy Family Church website at hfcmn.org.
Interment will be at Gethsemane Cemetery, New Hope.
