Virgil G. Oberlander of Plymouth, MN, formerly of Jamestown & West Fargo, ND, passed away on February 7, 2024.
Virgil G. Oberlander was born in LaMoure County, ND on Dec. 5, 1937, the son of Gustave & Ida (Job) Oberlander. He grew up on the family farm at Nortonville, ND. He worked for various farmers and then entered the US Navy on Jan. 3, 1956, until the latter part of 1959 where he finished his H.S. and Trade School education. After his honorable discharge he came back to Jamestown where he married the love of his life, Elaine Morlock on August 3, 1962, at Pettibone, ND. They had two sons, Gerald and Steve.
Virgil & Elaine lived in Jamestown for 42 years, and Virgil worked at Jamestown College as Physical Plant Director for 21 years. In their younger years they enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling with their sons. Later in life they enjoyed dancing, golfing, and bowling with friends, until retiring due to work injuries in 1997. He & Elaine later enjoyed traveling and casino runs and winters in AZ & NV. When Elaine passed away, Virgil moved to MN in 2011 and enjoyed spending time with his kids & his cherished granddaughter Jessica and enjoyed watching her play basketball: Grandpa was her Biggest Fan.
Virgil is survived by his son, Gerald (Beth) Oberlander & granddaughter, Jessica of Medina, MN; son, Steve Oberlander; and brother, Shelby Oberlander, both Jamestown, ND; and sister, Virginia (Edward) Gall of Mandan, ND; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine (Morlock) Oberlander; parents, Gustave & Ida Oberlander; and brothers, Harvey and Bert Oberlander.
Memorial Service will be 11 AM Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapel, 15800 37th Ave N, Plymouth, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with his wife, Elaine. Fort Snelling National Cemetery Honors to follow.
