Velma Jean Ferguson Garner

Velma Jean Ferguson Garner entered into eternal life Sept. 1, 2020. She was the 9 th child of 12 children of Clifton and Cealia Crawford, was raised in Mississippi, and after high school moved to St. Louis and worked in the X-Ray department of the local hospital. She met and married Tony Ferguson. They moved to Arizona where he was stationed in the Air Force. A couple of years later they planned to move to Pittsburgh, made a stop in Chicago and changed plans to come to Minnesota. They lived off campus of the University of MN St. Paul Campus, where Tony worked for 2 years and settled in South Mpls. They converted to Catholicism. They had 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys. They unfortunately divorced. Several years later Velma married Norman Garner and had another daughter. That marriage also ended. Velma attended the U of MN for a year and become employed by the Star Tribune. She worked in Paid Circulations for 28 years until early retirement due to illness. She sold the family home and moved into an apartment in Incarnation Parish. She attended daily Mass and made many friends there. She assisted at Parish events and was a personal attendant to several friends who were infirmed. She contracted follicular lymphoma in 2015.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Clifton and Cealia; her 4 brothers and 3 of her 7 sisters; children Gary Ferguson, Mary Ferguson and Angie Garner; and grandson Shaylon.

She is survived by her 2 remaining children; 4 sisters; 9 grandchildren; and over 10 great-grandchildren.

She loved God, family and friends. May she rest in God’s love and peace.

Traditional Latin Requiem Mass of Christian Burial Friday September 11 th at the Church of the Incarnation, 3801 Pleasant Ave, Mpls. at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior and Rosary at 10:30. Interment Assumption Cemetery.
