V. Lorraine Smith, age 97, of Minnetonka passed away on September 27, 2021 of congestive heart failure. Preceded in death by parents Henry and Vera Haugfos of Woodville, WI, and husband of 49 years, Howard E. Smith. Survived by children Ron (Nancy), Brad and Patty; grandchildren Brent, Michelle (Nick) and Emma (Michael); 5 great-grandsons, sister-in-law Ann Smith, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Lorraine was a 61-year charter and active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minnetonka where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 76 years, serving as Worthy Matron of Lake Harriet #202, and Grand Organist for Grand Chapter of MN. She was also the organist for the Excelsior Chapter in her later years. She served as both President and as Supreme Organist of the Social Order of the Beauceant during her 67 years as an active member.
She was a Cub Scout leader, delivered Meals on Wheels for almost 20 years (often to much younger recipients!), was an avid Twins fan, loved and enjoyed success at bowling, and did needlework when time permitted. She also enjoyed traveling both domestically and to Europe.
Lorraine grew up on a dairy farm and attended a one-room schoolhouse, often getting there on skis or by horse-drawn sleigh in the winter. She was an extraordinarily kind, patient mother who spent many hours hitting grounders to Ron and Brad in the back yard, and who never lost her sweetness even when one of them carved a “Z” for Zorro in the windowsill. She was known for always having delicious things on hand to eat - no one can begin to estimate the quantity of her bars, brownies, banana bread, rice pudding, lefse and potato salad that have been consumed over the years.
