Thomas J. Mathias

Thomas James Mathias of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2017, in New Hope, Minnesota.  He was born March 26, 1970 in Golden Valley, to Clifford and Dorothy Mathias, and was the youngest of six children.

At the time of his birth, he was found to have a heart defect. By age five it was determined that he needed surgery to close a hole between his ventricles, so he was operated on at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. He had another operation at age seven to close the hole between his arteries. He has had a healthy heart for almost forty years now.

Tom has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life.  He has served faithfully in many callings.  At age nineteen, he started two years of missionary work in the Virginia Roanoke Mission of the Church. He truly learned to love the state of Virginia and the people he met there.

He attended Noble Elementary School, Carl Sandberg Junior High School, and Robbinsdale Cooper High School where he graduated in 1988.  After his mission, he attended George Wythe College in southern Utah.  He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science.

While attending college, he met JeriAnn Bosh. On June 17, 1995, they were married at the LDS Temple in St. George, Utah.  After the wedding, he and JeriAnn moved to Minnesota. They have lived in Robbinsdale, his hometown, for most of their married life. While they both desired to have children they were never able.  They have enjoyed being with their nephews and nieces and the children of many of their friends.

In 2006, Tom was elected to the Robbinsdale City Council, representing the Fourth Ward.  He served on the City Council from January 2007 until December 2010.  As part of that City Council, he also served as a representative of Robbinsdale at the League of Minnesota Cities and Metro Cities as well as Mayor Pro Tem from January 2008 until December 2010 and Vice President of the Robbinsdale Economic Development Agency from January 2007 until December 2010.

Tom was a long-time, active member of the Sunriser’s Toastmasters Club.  He very much enjoyed participating in the club, saved every certificate and award he received there, and had happy associations with the other members of the club.

Tom has worked several different jobs in his life, including: working for the family business, Patriot Printers; a copy shop in downtown Minneapolis; at George Wythe College; as a Helpdesk Technician; as an abstractor for Commonwealth Land Title and later formed his own company, Tom N Jeri Title Search, LLC.  Most recently he was a Special Education Bus Driver for the Osseo School District.  He has loved working with people, including his coworkers, at each of his jobs throughout his life.

In December 2015, he started having strange feelings in the left side of his head, beginning the week of Christmas.  At the same time he had some issues with kidney pain. He had a large stone removed in January and surgery on his parathyroid in March, both in 2016. On May 18, 2016, they finally looked into what was happening in his head, and they performed an MRI which showed a very large tumor in his brain. When they operated one week later to remove the tumor, it was found to be a very aggressive cancer, Gliosarcoma. He was treated with Radiation and Chemotherapy starting in July.

He is survived by his beautiful wife, JeriAnn (Bosh) Mathias; his two sisters, Barbara Evon (Jim) Van Heel,  and Cheryl Ann (Don) Jackson, his three brothers David Duane (Deb) Mathias, Karl Allen (Debby) Mathias, and Robert Clifford (Audra) Mathias, his Mother-in-law, Ada Evelyn (Hiatt) Bosh, many nephews and nieces and several great nephews and nieces. He is also survived by many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful parents, Dorothy Louise (Bergsrud) Mathias in 2013 and Clifford Charles Mathias in 2015, his grandparents Hazel Minerva (Schively) Mathias in 1969, Charles James Mathias in 1981, Morris Alvin Bergsrud in 2001 and Evelyn Lorena (Carpenter) Bergsrud in 2007, his brother-in-law Michael Racer (married to Barbara) in 1994, and his father-in-law Jerry Allan Bosh in 2010.
