Sylvia G. Blem

Sylvia G. Blem was born May 30, 1929, at Luxemburg, MN, to Joseph and Anna (Miller) Kruchten. Her family lived on a farm at Luxemburg in her early years and she frequently recalled walking three miles to school. When she was a teenager, her family moved to a farm at Big Lake and she graduated from Big Lake High School, proudly in the top ten from a class of eleven! She went on to attend St. Cloud Business School after which she was employed at the State Capitol in St. Paul as a Secretary. When she was home one weekend she met her future husband, Gordon, while attending St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Monticello. They were married there on November 8, 1952, and were blessed with four children. In 1958 they moved into their home in Robbinsdale that Gordon built. Sylvia has been blessed to reside in her own home ever since, with great appreciation for her son Jerome’s care, making that possible these past ten years. Sylvia loved being involved in parish life at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Golden Valley. She had headed up or served on the funeral lunch committee for over 400 funerals till aging out in her 80’s. She was known for making her delicious crescent shaped cinnamon coffee rings, loved ballroom dancing with her husband and their dance group, and cleaned her house A LOT, until later years. Sylvia enjoyed watching all the neighborhood children having fun playing in the boulevard throughout the years.

Sylvia is survived by her four children: Patricia Blem of Eugene, OR, Gordon (Lynnette) Blem of Olivia, Jerome Blem of Robbinsdale, and Mary Brobjorg of Maple Grove; five grandchildren: Amy (Vlad) von Barnes, Anna (Mark) Milner, Aaron (Amanda) Blem, Dan (Laura) Brobjorg, and Nate Brobjorg; and seven great grandchildren: Ellie von Barnes, Carmen and Louis Milner, Andrew, Winnie and Ezra Blem, and Greta Brobjorg. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Gordon in 1995; son-in-law Joseph Brobjorg; and her siblings: Marie Lang, Florence Kenning, Ken Kruchten, Virginia Feneis, Lucille Gese, and infant brother Dennis Kruchten.

Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Church of St. Margaret Mary, 2323 Zenith Ave N., Golden Valley. Visitation Friday at church one hour before Mass. Interment Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to, may make a donation directly to a memorial of their choice in Sylvia’s memory.
