Steven Ernest Wold, age 70, passed away on February 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, just a few months after being diagnosed with ALS. Steve was born on April 23, 1954, in Cooperstown, ND, to Ernest and Helen Wold. He graduated from the University of North Dakota, where he met Judith Marie (Judy) Lyste on their first day of college; they married on August 16, 1975. They have two children, Marissa Judith and Andrew Steven.
Growing up on a farm in North Dakota instilled in him a strong work ethic and love of the outdoors that he carried with him throughout his life.
He showed an early aptitude for math and the sciences and attended the School of Engineering at UND to study mechanical engineering. After graduation, Steve and Judy moved to Onalaska, WI, to begin their careers at Trane Company in LaCrosse, WI.
In 1983 they moved to Plymouth, MN, where Steve began work at McQuay International (now Daikin) in the Twin Cities. He remained there for the rest of his professional engineering career in various management/director roles, retiring in 2021.
In1992 the family moved to an acreage in Medina, MN, that Steve loved and where he took on many outdoor projects; loved raising his children there; and eventually traipsed around the property with his five grandkids, teaching them about the plants, animals, and birds they saw.
Upon learning of his ALS diagnosis, they moved to Eden Prairie, MN, where he lived his last few months, closer to both children.
Steve was a man of deep faith and very involved in their church, where he sang in the choir, played the trombone, taught confirmation, volunteered to help families experiencing homelessness, and served on the church council. He and Judy met some of their closest lifelong friends there.
Steve enjoyed walking and snowshoeing around the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. He was a perpetually curious person and lifelong learner; he was a voracious reader and loved museums. He and Judy loved to travel, eventually visiting six continents, including family trips together. He approached travel as an opportunity to learn about other cultures without any judgment and to appreciate the beauty of all humanity and this earth.
Steve loved his family deeply, and they were always his priority. The world and their lives are better for having had him for seventy years; they just wish they could have kept him a little longer.
Steve is survived by Judy, his loving wife of nearly 50 years; his children Marissa (Joe) Uhrina of Eden Prairie, and Andrew (Caitlin) Wold of Bloomington; and his five beacons of light and love, his grandchildren Elinor and Jacob Uhrina; Elizabeth, Marie, and Henry Wold. His Grandpa title was the title he treasured most. He is also survived by his sister Dianne (Darrel) Gunst and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the ALS Association and his ALS clinic medical team at Mayo Clinic. Their support through every stage of this disease was immeasurable and appreciated beyond words.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 14th at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, 15600 Old Rockford Road, Plymouth, MN, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
Memorials preferred: ALS Association, 1919 University Ave W, Ste 175, St Paul, MN 55104 or the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, 3675 Arboretum Dr, Chaska, MN 55318.
