Rosemarie "Rosie" Smart

Rosemarie “Rosie” (Stockton) Smart, age 85, of Golden Valley, died Thursday, May 7, 2020. Born February 7, 1935 in Minneapolis, MN. She was the daughter of the late Muriel Behncke (Gosslin) and stepfather Lester Behncke.

Rosie attended the College of Saint Catherine where she received a degree in nursing. She served in the Air Force as a flight nurse where she met her husband, Ronald Smart and they were married in 1965. Together they raised eight children. She was a stay at home mom who enjoyed raising her children and volunteering during their years at St. Margaret Mary.

As her children grew she started “Rosie’s Daycare” and thus impacted many children beyond her own. In her later years she returned to her nursing roots; working at Hillcrest Nursing Home, always setting an example of putting others before herself. She looked forward to vacations up north and spending time with her family; especially her grandchildren. She was thrilled when her last grandchildren were twin boys.

She is survived by children; Marie (Mark) Treichel, David (Jill), James (Megan Kelly), Susan (Andrew) Peters, Robert (Angela), Margaret Ladwig, Kathleen (Tim) Hane; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Smart; 22 grandchildren; sister-in-law, Audrey Smart.

Preceded in death by husband, Ronald; son, Richard; son-in-law, Bruce Ladwig; brother-in-law, William Smart.
