A brother. A son. A friend to many.
On a normal day, Ronan Michael Banavige was found solving Rubik’s cubes, playing Magic: The Gathering, or perfecting his steak-cooking techniques. With a quick wit and an infectious smile, Ronan’s presence lit up the lives of everyone he met. His empathy and gentle kindness have left an everlasting mark on his family and friends. As an avid outdoorsman, Ronan was most comfortable camping, canoeing, rock climbing, and engaging with friends.
Ronan was raised in Independence, Minnesota. He attended Orono High School (OHS), where he founded the Philosophy Club and was President of the Chinese Club. Ronan was an active member and leader of Boy Scout Troop 206, through which he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from OHS, Ronan attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts. At WPI, Ronan was quickly immersed in the Lego, Rubik’s Cube, and Ultimate Frisbee Clubs.
Ronan was lost to an apparent suicide on October 31, 2021, after a long struggle with mental health challenges. At the young age of 18, with his whole life ahead of him, Ronan’s loss has devastated his family. As a family of strong Catholic faith, Ronan's surviving relatives take great comfort in knowing he is now at peace with the Lord.
Survived by parents Maureen and Joseph Banavige, siblings Ben, Jeb (Audrey), and Maeve Banavige, grandparents Dan and Miki Banavige, uncle Gerry Madden, aunts Kathleen Jones and Nize Madden, and cousins Jack and Caroline Jones. Preceded in death by two unborn siblings, grandparents John and GG Madden, and aunt Tamara Banavige.
Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, 155 County. Rd. 24, Medina. Visitation Monday, November 8, 4-7 PM with 6:30 PM memory sharing also at Holy Name of Jesus. Interment Holy Name Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Ronan's family would be honored to have donations be made to the “Ronan Banavige Scouting Memorial Fund.” As a legacy to Ronan’s Scouting life, this Fund will provide financial support and scholarships to expand access to programs such as Scoutreach, High Adventures, and summer camps. To donate, complete the instructions at the following link and type “Ronan Banavige Scouting Memorial Fund” in the notes section.
