We are sad to announce the death of Robert Troemel who died of lymphoma on November 17, 2022, at the age of 90 years while at home in Bloomington, Minnesota. Robert was born July 31, 1932 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His parents were Marie Muench Troemel and Gustav Troemel, who was Pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Robert grew up in the Lutheran parsonage with two older brothers and a younger sister. He attended Irving and Lowell grade schools in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1950.
Following the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in February 1951. The first years of his enlistment were spent at various bases in the US, but he spent the last two years at Wheelus Air Base, Tripoli, Libya. While stationed at Tripoli, Robert was able to visit many Biblical and Roman Archaeological sites in the Middle East, which led to his lifelong interest in archaeology.
Robert was discharged from the Air Force in January 1955 and in the fall of that year enrolled at South Dakota State University at Brookings, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He later received a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1968. Robert was first employed with Remington Rand Univac in St. Paul, Minnesota and in 1969 joined Control Data’s Government Systems Division where he worked in Business Development. Robert retired in December 1996.
Robert married Lois Michael on June 16, 1962 in Howard Lake, Minnesota and they raised four children; Michael, Katherine, Sarah and Emily. The family moved to Plymouth, Minnesota in 1964 where Robert and Lois resided in the same house for 57 years. Robert and Lois moved to the Amira retirement apartments in Bloomington, Minnesota in November 2021.
During his adult life Robert was an active member of two Lutheran churches in Plymouth; Christ Memorial and St. Barnabas. Robert and Lois enjoyed good relationships with their adult children and shared numerous family vacations with them in Europe and Asia, including trips to archeological sites, which were Robert’s favorite. Robert also pursued his interest in family genealogy and has a detailed Troemel Family tree available on Ancestry.com.
Robert is survived by his wife Lois of 60 years, his children Michael, Katherine (Eric Ormson), Sarah and Emily, and grandchildren John Ormson (Rachel), Madison Ormson and Christian Ormson. He is also survived by his sister, Wanda Mir and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Norman and Roland.
