Robert J. Pykonen, a ge 98, formerly of Minnetonka, passed away on September 26, 2020. Born in Atlantic Mine, Michigan to Arvid and Lulu (Maki) Pykonen. Robert was a proud Navy veteran of WWII and survived the sinking of the USS Lexington and the Battle of the Coral Sea, serving 38 years. He retired from Minnegasco in 1982 after 34 years. During his retirement he volunteered at several organizations including the Courage Center & the City of Minnetonka. He also celebrated his 49 th year of sobriety as a longtime member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He loved visiting his family and friends, photography, cross country and downhill skiing. Survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Ila; children, Bonnie (Bruce) Battaglia, Angie (Jackson Buck); grandson, Jeffrey Battaglia. Private graveside service with military honors will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery on 10/21/2020. Video will be posted on the Gearty-Delmore website that afternoon. Memorials preferred to the Ronald McDonald House or the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
