Robert Lawrence Miller, Age 93, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2021. Bob was born on November 21, 1927 to Lawrence and Elizabeth Monaghan Miller in Cedar Rapids Iowa, the eldest of 5 children.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Anne Corlis Miller, whom he lovingly called Mother Superior. Bob and Anne were preceded in death by their son John Michael Miller, son-in-law David Tigan and grandson John Paul Miller.
Bob is survived by nine children and their spouses, Barbara Tigan, Mary Claassen (Sam), Debbie Saunders (Allen), Martin Miller, Ginny DeSanto (Will), Michael Miller (Patty), Anne Albers (Tom), Thomas Miller (Cathy), and Jeanne Oberg (Mike), as well as 47 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his sisters Arlene Maloney, JoAnne Williams, and Mary Cay Hurt, his brother Gerald, and his brother-in-law Loras Maloney. He is survived by his brothers-in-law Louis Corlis (Carol), Al Hurt, and many nieces and nephews.
Bob graduated from Immaculate Conception High School and joined the US Army. He then attended St. Louis University before settling in Cedar Rapids with Anne. He worked at Cedar Rapids Paint for many years as bookkeeper and salesman and was an active member of the Catholic community, at Immaculate Conception where he met Anne and at St. Patrick’s and All Saints where they raised their family. Bob and Anne moved to the Twin Cities in the 1970s to be a part of the Catholic charismatic movement and enjoyed the fellowship of People of Praise community for many years. After moving to Minnesota, he worked at First Western Bank until his retirement. He was active in Christians in Commerce while in the Twin Cities and Loaves and Fishes, Toastmasters, and Full Gospel Businessmen in Cedar Rapids. His love for Jesus and others was evident in his smile and hearty laugh. Bob was a fixer: cars, bikes, snow throwers, lawn mowers, you name it. His family brought him things to fix and he showed his love by making them better. Bob was a doer; he could be counted on to help move, paint, refinish, tile, pull up carpet, lay down new floor for the houses he and Anne owned, as well as the many houses his children owned through the years. Bob was a pray-er; what he couldn’t fix with his hands or hard work was put at the feet of Jesus. He had an exuberance for life that was loud and hearty. It did not dim with age.
The family is grateful to the staff at the VA Home in Minneapolis for their excellent care for Bob during the last two years and to the staff at the VA Day Center in Bloomington.
