Robert McCall Drake, CAPT., MD,
age 100, succumbed to COVID-19 on November 11, 2020 in St. Louis Park, MN.
Bob was born in Mpls on May 31, 1920, son of Dr. Charles & Ruth (McCall) Drake. His sister Marilyn remembers Bob as a wonderful brother, and recalls many happy days sailing with him on Lake Harriet. Bob graduated from the University of Minnesota and became a doctor. He married Merry Hoyt in 1948 and they had three children. He served proudly as an officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps for over 20 years, receiving pathology training at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, working at the Mayo Clinic and completing numerous tours, including in Guam, an experience he loved to recount. He retired from service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
In 1973, Bob married Dorothy Hoyt, a widowed nurse. They returned to Minneapolis, where Bob worked at Minneapolis Children's Hospital until retiring in 1985. They had 41 great years traveling and enjoying each other's company until her death in 2014. Bob loved baseball, French, actually enjoyed Proust, and was a long time member of the Alliance Française. Bob also taught French at the Parkshore Senior Campus for 17 years to many residents. Bob treated everyone with kindness, always putting others before himself. When his brother, Ted, had cancer, Bob visited him daily. He was an honorable man who touched the hearts of many and will be forever remembered and missed by family and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by many loved ones, including his sister Jayne.
Bob is survived by his children, Miller Drake (Linda), Alixe Bielot (David) and Martha Laliberte' (Michael); his grandchildren, Paul Robert Laliberte' and Samantha Drake; his sister Marilyn Sisler; loving nieces, nephews; Sheryl Martinson and Austin DeVries Dorothy’s granddaughter and great-grandson, Dorothy’s other grandchildren, Julie and Kris, and many more great-grandchildren.
Bob is buried next to Dorothy at Lakewood Cemetery. A real role model to all the lives he touched.
