Dick Newman passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025. His spirit is now with our Lord! He was born on May 19, 1927 in Minneapolis. His parents were George and Esther Newman. He grew up in North Minneapolis with his parents and two sisters, Mary and Marcia during the Great Depression. After Dick graduated from high school in May 1945, he joined the Army and was assigned to duty in the American occupation zone of Germany.
Dick met his future wife Maryann after returning to Minnesota. They were married on May 13, 1950 (almost 75 years ago). Dick received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Minnesota in 1951. A couple of years after he graduated, he switched employers and started working for Univac (Sperry Univac) in St. Paul. Dick spent the rest of his working career at this company and eventually retired in 1987.
Throughout his life, Dick enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, traveling (especially Florida in the winter), genealogy and a good game of cribbage. Dick and Maryann volunteered for many years with The Gathering at Oak Knoll Lutheran Church. He also spent many hours volunteering at the food shelf at Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners in Plymouth.
Dick loved his family and was a wonderful spouse, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Maryann and by his three children and their spouses, Linda and Christopher Hermann, Paul and Beth Newman and Christine and Jim Chiles. Dick and Maryann were also blessed and are survived by 7 grandchildren and spouses and 10 great-grandchildren (with another one due in July). Dick was preceded in death by his sisters and their spouses, Mary and Jim Barcel and Marcia and Don Mullan.
Dick was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by his immediate and extended family and the many friends he made during his long life.
Dick’s funeral will be held at Oak Knoll Lutheran Church in Minnetonka on Wednesday, April 23rd. A visitation will start at the church at 10:00, the funeral service at 11:00, followed by a lunch at the church. The family will attend his burial at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis after the lunch. If you are unable to attend the funeral service you can watch at the following website link https://youtube.com/live/SuEc1__D8K4.
If you would like to honor Dick’s life, please consider sending a donation to the Struthers Parkinson’s Center, Oak Knoll Lutheran Church or a local food shelf.
