Raymond Ferrian

Born November 16, 1925. Died of complications from influenza and Parkinson’s disease, February 28, 2017.

Ray was the youngest son of Chris and Clara Ferrian.  He attended St. Anne’s school in North Minneapolis and De La Salle High school, which he left at age 17 to join the US Navy after Pearl Harbor.  He served aboard the USS Vincennes as a Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class.  After the war, at his future father-in-law’s urging, he attended barber school, and was able to take over his dad’s barber shop on Penn and Lowry after his father’s death.  He married Betty Jane Bonin, his sister Ida’s childhood friend, on July 3, 1948.  Ray and Betty had five daughters, all of whom attended St. Anne’s School and Catholic high schools.  On his day off, Ray went to North Memorial Hospital and offered haircuts on the men’s ward.  Ray was an avid fisherman, duck and pheasant hunter and golfer.  His hobbies were woodworking and coin collecting.  In his later years at St. Therese Assisted Living, he took up oil painting.  Ray was a life-long, faithful Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Anne’s Men’s Club and a proud member of the Barbers’ Union.  He enjoyed his and Betty’s card club, and their social club, the Debonaires. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a beloved uncle and friend.

Preceded in death by his dear wife, Betty, to whom he was married for 66 years; his parents; brothers, Lawrence and Harold and their wives; sister, Verona; and many dear friends.

Survived by his daughters and their spouses: Mary Beth and Al Liekhus; Barbara and Pat Munnelly; Jeanne Ferrian and Rob Byers; Betsy (Liz) and Rick O’Brien; Patty (Pat) Ferrian and Merle DeNuccio.  Grandchildren, Gregory, Fr. Jim, Marie & Dr. Brian Idelkope, John & Jess Liekhus; Jess, Gina (Rebecca), Angie & Jared, John & Nicole, Luke, Jamie and Michael Munnelly; Ben, Emily and Katie (Katherine) Byers-Ferrian; Chip & Judy O’Brien, Erin & Derek Wagner.  Great-Grandchildren Brandon and Carly Liekhus; Nathan, Sam and Eli Idelkope; Carter and Levi Munnelly; Cole O’Brien; Irene Wagner and Baby Wagner due in May. Also survived by his sister, Ida Beltrand, his sister-in-law Clara Bonin, and many nieces and nephews.
