She is predeceased by parents, Myra Elizabeth Wilhelmina Wickstrom (nee Breening) and Hugo Marino Wickstrom; daughter, Ann Dolores Peabody; sister, Dolores (Wickstrom) Ocel; niece, Renee’ Johnson; and former husband and fond friend, Arthur Peabody.
She leaves behind daughters, Lee Ann Peabody Taggart (Mark), Amy Elizabeth Carr (Terry), and Sarah Peabody Nelson (Greg); grandchildren,
Caitlin Earle (Ryan), Madeline Carr (Rachel Roiblatt), Elisabeth Carr, Noah Nelson (Molly Butler) and Karl Taggart; nieces, Denise Hogan (Mike), and Becky Larson (Dean).
Phyllis received her baccalaureate degree from MacPhail School of Music, University of Minnesota. She was an active member of many musical organizations, including the Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA) and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). In addition to serving in a host of administrative positions, Phyllis was a past president of MMTA. Organizations associated with Phyllis’ passion for equestrian sports included the Long Lake Hounds (Fox Hunting Club) and the Minnesota Hunter Jumper Association. She was a lifelong, dedicated supporter of
the Animal Humane Society and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Phyllis raised three strong and confident daughters, who share a combined 100 years of marriage, and raised kind, curious, and compassionate children. She was independent, respected, loyal, elegant, funny, and undeniably “spiffy.” She always told us to stand up straight, and to never let anyone tell us we couldn’t do something. She empowered us with these words of wisdom, “You have everything you need and have done everything you can do, so go out there and prove them wrong!” Phyllis was a woman ahead of her time. Her hope for us was that as women, we would be able to take advantage of opportunities not as easily accessible to her because of societal norms and gender expectations. As a teacher, she not only had high expectations for her students, but for herself as well. She gave her students the guidance needed to grow as artists, and for many of them, the guidance to grow as individuals. To the end, she remained fondly committed to them. Phyllis was a strong presence and a passionate person, and we know she was extraordinarily proud of our accomplishments, passions, business goals, and personal lives. But perhaps most of all, she let us know how proud she was of each of us as individuals, and for helping our families, friends, and acquaintances find their joy. Let us all be instruments of peace.
