A message to Payton,

You were a blessing and a gift when you were born and brought so much joy to our lives. It was an honor and privilege to hold you, watch you for endless hours and love you. You were a wonderfully creative child building your own elaborate Lego designs for hours. We watched you grow throughout the years and enjoyed watching you develop the love of basketball you got from your Mom, Uncle Tyler and Grandpa. Your kindness was the cornerstone of your soul. You were a protector, a gentle force of nature, peacemaker, an intelligent computer genius, funny and kind, we are so proud of you.  We have so many beautiful memories of vacations spent traveling with you, summers at Lake Okoboji and helping Grandpa build the man-cave at the cabin. You will be with us in our hearts forever. We will cherish every indelible memory made, your smile, hugs and love. You are a sunburst of light that will never dim. The last thing we always said to each other was I love you, you are so loved.

Grandpa and Grandma

Payton, you have always had the most beautiful smile. You were such a
caring and loving person. Always making the best out of any situation,
usually being silly making everyone around you laugh. From the day you
changed my life forever and made me a mom, I knew you were going to be
my lion. Grandma always dressed you in Tommy HIlfiger and it so
happens that the animal that represented the brand was a lion. You have
held this love of lions throughout your short 20 years on Earth. The
symbolism of the lion in the Bible represents strength, power, courage and
protection; a symbol of a great heart with immense strength. You are the
king of kings with the mightiest of courage. Heaven and Earth separate us
right now but you are my first thought every morning and my last thought
every night. Your smile and laugh are ingrained in my head and heart.
One of our favorite traits about you is how goofy you could be. You were
always smiling, even during hard times of your life. You showed me such
an incredible strength and perseverance. On the basketball court you were
smiling or laughing even if you were being challenged. I am so proud to
have the honor of being your mom and even prouder of everything you
have accomplished and I didn't tell you that enough. I have so many
cherished memories of you from being an independent and easy baby,
building choo-choo's, watching bob the builder, playing in the dirt, starting
food fights in kindergarten, your love of Star Wars and building the most
complicated ships from thousands of lego pieces, including your AT-AT
Walker that you have held onto still today but let's not forget your favorite,
Master Yoda, picking up the love of basketball and schooling me, allowing
me the opportunity of coaching you, playing basketball together, watching
you play basketball with such determination causing Grandpa, Grandma
and I to lose our voices cheering for you, stepping up to be the man of the
house, helping me build my two salons, terrifying me while teaching you
how to drive, being the best commentator of our vacations on the go pro
and Claire’s hockey, testing Poseidon with a jet ski on our vacations,
helping everyone we know with all of our computer and technology
problems, spending your own money you worked so hard for to build a
$5,000 computer gaming system all by yourself, being the master
commander or what it seemed with your online games screaming at your
friends playing with you, giving your sisters rides all over the place, being
an amazing son, big-brother, nephew, grandson and friend that will fill a
large portion of our hearts forever. You were always so giving, you have
helped so many people with this transition of life. I hope they all know they
received the best gifts anyone could get and you will live on through so
many people. We had so many more memories to build...I wasn’t done
sharing all of your favorite things with you, I keep telling myself this isn't
happening. You have always had my competitiveness drive and you beat
me home. I have been okay with you beating me but not this time.
Everyday I look for signs that you are still with me. This is a pain that I
can't describe. There isn't a word for a parent that loses a child. I will
never get over this. I pray and look to you as the best angel I could ever
have to give me strength every day. Watch over your sisters, you meant so
much to them and they always wanted more time every day with you. You
were Skylar’s best friend since she was born, even though she didn’t like
Star Wars or video games, she still wanted you to fill her soul with your
goofiness, she loved playing basketball with you, protect her like you
always have as her big-brother. Claire has tried to play basketball but
everytime she jams her finger or like the last time we played basketball she
got a fat lip from getting in your way. We will remember you at every
hockey game she plays in and she will continue to do her, double stick in
your honor. Keep an eye on your brothers for me, they looked up to you
more than you know. Protect Grandpa, Grandma, Tyler and Amber, they
were usually the ones teaching you about life, directing you towards
success, spoiling you, listening to all of your dreams and helping mold you
into the man you became. Your friends need you too, lead them towards
all of the good and keep them safe. You brought such joy into our lives,
even when you never texted any of us back. I hope you are playing
basketball or your video games, living the life you dreamed of because you
only deserve the best. Give Chloe a huge hug for me! I can't wait to see
you again, I really miss you...Rest in peace my beautiful boy.

Love you forever Payton,

Mom
