Patricia Ann (Rausch) Altier, age 88, of Little Canada passed away at home on August 25, 2021. Preceded in death by her parents Helen and John Rausch, sons John and Donald, siblings Jack, Robert, William, Thomas, and Mary Dombrock. Survived by her husband of 64 years, Eugene and children Fr. Robert, Patricia (Thomas) Allard, Margaret (Anthony) Grgas, David (Susan), Kathryn (Dale) Frable, and Timothy (Patricia), grandchildren Joshua Allard, Laura Allard, Nicole Motley, Nicholas Grgas, Brian Grgas, Mary Grgas, Jacob Grgas, Larry Altier, Samuel Altier, Joseph Altier, Michael Altier, Charles Frable, Anna Frable, Jack Frable and Bridget Tracy, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her sister Helen (Steve) Chambers.
Pat was born and raised in St. Paul Minnesota, the oldest daughter of Helen and John Rausch. She and Gene married in 1957 and began to raise their family of 8 children together in their St. Paul home. She held many titles in life, including: daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, friend, wife. More than anything, the titles she loved most were ‘Mom’ and ‘Grandma’, and she was mom to so many more than just her own children. For many years she was a daycare mom to dozens of children who were welcomed into her home. In addition, her children’s friends always thought of her as a second mom and her home was the place to hang out. After the death of her parents, Pat became the guardian for her brother Bob. He adored her and loved being a member of the busy household.
A stoic German, Pat didn’t always show her love through hugs and kisses. Instead, you knew she loved you if you left her house with a full belly and a plate full of goodies for the road. An avid baker, she would make fresh desserts for her family nearly every day of the week, so much so that her spoiled children would never eat “day old” baked goods!
When she wasn’t caring for children, making big dinners, or baking for the family, Pat always found time for crafts. She was an accomplished seamstress who made all her own clothes, along with clothes for Gene and their children. She also made some fantastic Halloween costumes over the years. When Cabbage Patch Dolls were the “hot” toy, she began to make her own, making well over 100 dolls! She didn’t stop at the dolls though; each one of the dolls came dressed in handmade outfits. She was also a quilter, a candy-maker, and a basket-weaver.
Above all else, Pat was a faith-filled Catholic woman. Her background and faith were present in every interaction she had with others. Whether it was in conversations with friends, gifts she carefully crafted to give to those she loved, or the meals and treats she prepared for family and friends. She celebrated with pride as her children and grandchildren received the sacraments. Know if you were loved by Pat, she absolutely prayed for you, as she prayed for everyone who was a part of her life.
