Nancy Elaine Maas was born on October 18, 1935 in St. Paul Minnesota and graduated from Hill Murray High School in 1953. She was active in 4H and was a Dairy Princess for Ramsey County. She received a BA and Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota. Nancy met John Maas at a college dance and they were married for 21 years, raising four children in the first five years of marriage. The family moved from Minnesota to four different states and returned to Minnesota in 1970. They settled in Shorewood near Lake Minnetonka, and Nancy taught at Excelsior Elementary School for 25 years. She was very passionate about helping children learn and being creative in the classroom.
Nancy retired in 2000 and continued to be very active, going to water aerobics weekly, skiing into her 70’s, singing in two choirs and golfing every summer. Nancy’s greatest loves were her children, grandchildren and her wonderful friends. In retirement she travelled all over the world including Belize, Peru, Chile, Europe, the Middle East, Japan, China and Russia. She loved boating on Lake Minnetonka, and enjoyed going to the Guthrie, Orpheum and choir concerts. In the last few years Nancy struggled with Alzheimers disease, and was well loved by those who cared for her. We are grateful for wonderful care at the Wealshire facility where they called her “Fancy Nancy” and she would smile in response. She passed away peacefully on March 6, 2020 and we are so grateful for the phone calls, prayers, visits and love from all who knew her.
Nancy is survived by her children, Deb (John) Bergstrand, Ginger (Brian) Crockett, Robert (Susan Black) Maas, and Jack (Mary) Maas; grandchildren, David, Nelson, Abby, Sarah, Taylor, Adam, Carl, Mary, Clinton, and Lindsay; great-grandchildren, Loreli, Elliot, and Adeline; sisters, Carol (Gary) Benz, and Barbara Johnson; and many other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held for Nancy on Friday, March 13 at 11 AM at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 12235 Old Rockford Road, Plymouth, with visitation one hour prior. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery.
