Nancy C Anderson (Austin) 3/29/1929 – 7/8/2018
Nancy was welcomed into the world on March 29, 1929 in Muncie, Indiana by her parents Hattie Mae "Peggy" and Frank C Austin; and her brother Robert. Ball Brothers Jar Company was significant her whole life as her father worked for them as an accountant. Homemade mince meat pies were their Christmas gift to the Ball family for many years. Nancy was involved in many activities in her youth. She was the first to sign up for Brownies in her community and even got her photo with an article in the newspaper. She attended Muncie Central High School and then went on to study at Hanover College where she joined Phi Mu Sorority. While at Hanover, she met her future husband of 67 years, Ralph W Anderson. She graduated in 1950 and immediately was contacted by the president of the college with a job offer. Nancy and Ralph got engaged in October and were married December 27, 1950. She worked as the president’s secretary until Ralph finished college in 1951.
Ralph soon accepted a job for a consulting firm and their adventures began. Together they traveled the country doing fundraising campaigns and living 6-12 months in various cities (some not so tropical). Nancy was a trooper as an unpaid staff secretary and social coordinator. When David and Roger came along they settled down in Indianapolis. In 1965, Ralph accepted a job at Macalester College and they moved the family to Minneapolis. She loved her home on West 49 th Street. Nancy created the concept of Banana Split Sundays when friends and neighbors would make ice cream sundaes and then walk it off around Lake Harriet. While the boys were in school, Nancy volunteered and worked as a teaching assistant. Later she worked as a part-time travel agent. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. She served as a deacon for 6 years and was on session for 6 years. And they played a lot of Bridge.
Nancy was also a member of PEO and kept in touch with this organization until she passed. She treasured the friendships she made here and all her dear friends from over the years. She was an excellent cook and was quick to send a nourishing meal to any neighbor or friend in need. She loved to spend time with their 5 grandchildren; reading, coloring, teaching numbers and letters, going to the park, lots of picnics, attending choir, band, and theatre productions, singing silly songs, teaching proper manners, and supporting their many endeavors.
Ralph always said that Nancy has been known for her quick smile. She has been recognized for her talents and kind personality in every city that they have visited. People scattered all around the country know Nancy, and she is well loved by many.
Nancy was preceded by her parents Frank and Hattie Mae Austin and her husband of 67 years, Ralph W Anderson.
She is survived by sons, David (Lisa) and Roger (Eileen); grandchildren Samantha (Josh) Weidner, Robert, Valerie, Emily and Dylan; brother Robert C Austin; and 50+ nieces and nephews.
