Mona Marie Getz Becker
age 74 of Robbinsdale Care Center, Robbinsdale passed away March 11, 2017.

Mona was born March 28, 1942 to Roy and Lorna Getz in Barrett, MN. She was baptized and confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church near Barrett, graduated from Barrett High School in 1960 and Concordia College, Moorhead in 1964. On May 27, 1967 she married Delmar Becker. She was strong in her faith and active in her church (Mpls-St. Paul Church of Christ).

Mona was born with spastic Paraparesis, a genetic disease that several other relatives have had. She had difficulty waking all her life. She did exercises and was helped by doctors, but before long she had to rely on a wheelchair. Her family, friends and classmates were always willing to help.

Mona and Delmar lived in Mandan for over 20 years. In the late 1980’s Delmar became ill and moved into the Mandan Care Center. Since Mona could not live alone, she moved with him. She decided to move to Minnesota in 1995 to live with her mother, Lorna at the Barrett Care Center. She was grateful to have a few months with her mom before Lorna passed away on May 19, 1995. After that, Mona lived in group homes or various families for several years.

Then in January 2000 she moved to the Robbinsdale Care Center in Robbinsdale. She was glad to be there and soon made friends. She enjoyed it when family members came to visit and she enjoyed feeding the birds and animals. In spite of her paralysis and in spite of a difficult marriage, Mona was able to find enjoyment and meaning of life. She was able to complete college and teach high school. She joined in church activities, helped people and developed her talents such as painting.

Mona is preceded in death by husband, Delmar; parents, Roy and Lorna Getz and sister, Kathy Eilers.

Mona is survived by sister, Irene Getz (Ed Fastner); brother, David Getz; nephews, Derek Getz (Sara), Lance Getz, Brandt Getz, Gerry Getz (Amber) and their children; other relatives and the many friends she made at Robbinsdale Rehab Center and the Mpls-St. Paul Church of Christ.

Memorial service 2 PM Saturday at Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale Chapel, 3888 W. Broadway with visitation beginning at 1 PM.
