Michael Patrick Skelly, 74, born and raised in Twin Cities, Minnesota and most recently of Summerville, SC, died Monday morning in a Charleston SC hospital.

Mike was born November 3, 1946, in Minneapolis, MN, a son of Roy William Skelly and Lorraine Evelyn (Dooher) Skelly. He attended De La Salle High School from 1960 - 1964 where he played on the basketball team. After graduation, he continued to play basketball for the University of St. Thomas where he received his Bachelors Degree in Education and Sociology. Mike served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He once again had the opportunity to play basketball for the Army while stationed in Worms, Germany.

Mike was former owner and operator of Skelly's Diamond Carpet in Maple Grove, MN, also the former owner and operator of The Computer Guy in Maple Grove, MN. He also was a health and physical education teacher at Robbinsdale High School. He loved coaching basketball, especially his daughters and was a proud alumnus of De La Salle High School (MN) and his Tommies (University of St. Thomas, MN).  Mike was member of the VETS Club in Summerville, SC. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, cooking, walking in the pool, playing games on his phone, sports, and playing cards. His most treasured hobby was to watch his daughters and grandkids activities. He enjoyed having a bag of dark chocolate peanut M&M’s while doing so. We know he now has the best seat in the house and will continue being their supporter from heaven.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob Skelly; and brother-in-law, Tom Bohlinger. Surviving are his fiancé, Kevin Marie Shaughnessy; five daughters, Meg and Andy Kendzor (Zack and Matt) of West Bend, WI, Erin and Josh Smith (Joey and Trevor) of Okemos, MI, Jenny Skelly and Jeff Sipe, San Diego, CA, Andrea Skelly (Shawn, Carter and Brianna) of Monticello, MN, and Mary and Matt Hayes (expecting in March 2022), of St. Michael, MN; two sisters, Kathy Bohlinger of Maple Grove, MN, Eileen (John) Gibbs of Lakeville, MN, and; two brothers, Jim (Cheryl) Skelly of Champlin, MN, and Patrick Skelly of Minneapolis, MN and sister-in-law, Ellen Skelly of Apple Valley; many nieces and nephews.

Mike’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 30, 2021 from 12 Noon-3 PM, concluding with a Liturgy of the Word, 2:30 PM at the De La Salle High School Gymnasium.  The family requests that masks be worn while in the building.

The family suggests memorials be made to De La Salle High School Athletic Department, One De La Salle Dr., Minneapolis, MN 55401.

Burial at a later date at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
