Devout Catholic, member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Crystal 55 years, 63 years marriage. BA - St. John's University, MA - U of MN. High School/Community College teacher/counselor 32 years.

Wake was Thursday, 12/29/17, 4-7 pm at Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale Chapel, 3888 W. Broadway. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday 12/30/17, 11 am at The Church of St. Raphael, 7301 Bass Lake Rd., Crystal with visitation one hour before.

Mike’s faith was the foundation of his life. He was a devout Catholic who grew up on a farm near Alice, North Dakota. He was born to Cornelius and Katherine Boyle and was the youngest of four children. At four years of age, his mother died leaving his father to hold and keep the family together. He started his schooling in a one-room country schoolhouse with a teacher who taught and also tenderly cared for him. Throughout his youth, he lived a simple life with an independent spirit. Mike graduated from Enderlin High School where he applied himself to his studies while enjoying extracurricular activities of playing football and singing well in choir. Mike then served in the navy in San Diego, California for one year. He started at St. John’s University in 1950 where he majored in English and Social Studies. He met Dolores who attended the College of St. Benedict.  They were married in 1953 before Mike graduated in the following year.

Over the next 63 years of marriage, Mike lived as a life-long learner as well as fully giving himself to his family. Mike began teaching at Menahga High School and continued in Prior Lake while attending graduate school for counseling and marriage and family therapy at the University of Minnesota. Then he counseled in Orono High School and concluded his career by counseling students at Anoka Ramsey Community College.

Mike and his wife, Dolores lived over fifty years of their married life in Crystal, Minnesota where they raised five children and were active in their Catholic faith at St. Raphael Church in Crystal. Their faith and stability provided a simple foundation for family. In all things: school, work, marriages, and grandchildren, Mike and Dolores, were always there, holding the family together in their close-knit, faith filled relationships.  An annual retreatant at Demontreville, Mike attended 38 consecutive years, with all four sons joining him for over a decade.

Above all, Mike and Dolores sought unity founded in love and forgiveness. Grateful for twenty-four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Mike loved doing many activities with family. He especially enjoyed picking out John Philip Sousa Marches for the annual family Fourth of July parade. Along with music, Mike enjoyed all the arts including poetry, history, words, and good conversation.

He loved the outdoors enjoying camping, hunting and canoeing, and his canoeing expertise was evident as he won many college canoeing derby championships.

With Dolores, Mike launched his retirement by embarking on an 8,000-mile Alaskan camping trip. They camped all around the United States visiting many historic places such as the Lewis and Clark Trail, National Parks, and Washington D.C. Mike and Dolores also traveled together, taking pilgrimages to Rome, Lourdes, Fatima, and Our lady of Guadalupe in Mexico.

Five years ago, Mike and Dolores made a new home at St. Therese Residence in New Hope. Due to declining heath, Mike lived his final two years in St. Therese’s Care Center. His family surrounded him in love as he continued to find pleasure in those things he loved throughout his whole life. He enjoyed music and poetry even until the last. Mike was present to his family.  All his history and who he was remained alive even without full clarity of mind. As Dolores put her hand in Mike’s hand shortly before he passed away, she said, “ Oh Mike, your hands are so warm and mine are like ice.” Mike’s response and last words to Dolores were, “Oh, Heaven above!” Throughout all, Mike’s hand was in Dolores’s hand and God’s hand was in it all.
