Mervin Daniel Winston, beloved 83-year-old resident of Plymouth, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 15, 2024, in Medina, MN, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born on June 14, 1941, in Pittsburgh, PA, Mervin was the son of Ethel (Buice) Goodman and Thomas Winston.
During his service in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963, Mervin demonstrated exceptional dedication and skill, earning a commendable good conduct medal, a parachutist badge, and a sharpshooter badge. After his honorable discharge, he embarked on an academic journey at The Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting in 1966 and a Master of Arts in Accounting and Data Processing in 1968.
On July 29, 1962, Mervin’s life took a joyous turn when he married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine (Gerri) Walker, in Columbus, OH. Together, they built a loving family, raising three children: Mark, Michael, and Matthew.
Throughout his professional career, Mervin held various esteemed positions, including Sr. Staff Consultant at Arthur Andersen, Director of Internal Audit at J.L. Hudson, Deputy Budget Director for the City of Detroit, and Corporate Director of Audit Operations at Dayton Hudson Corp. Notably, he served as the President and CEO of Metropolitan Economic Development Association (MEDA) and as the VP of Audit and Exam Division for First Bank System. He was the managing partner of Mervin Winston, Ltd. and Numbers Talk.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mervin was an avid enthusiast of several hobbies. He found great joy in biking, tennis, roller skating, and even channeling his inner quarterback as an armchair enthusiast. Spending quality time with his family was also a cherished aspect of his life.
Mervin is preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Goodman, father, Thomas Winston, and brothers, Robert Goodman and Thorla Winston.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Gerri Winston; his sons, Mark (Francine), Michael (April Podhradsky), and Matthew (Christine); grandchildren, Morgan and Lauren; Jada, Ella, and Owen; and Chloe, Camille, and Christopher. He is also survived by his brothers, Terry Winston (Sandra), Thaddeus Winston, and Tristan Winston (Vanessa); his sisters, Tanya Davis (Henry), Tami Winston (Vaughn Bass), and Erlyne Johnson; and sister-in-law, Joyce Newman and her husband, Leon Newman, who served as maid of honor and best man in Mervin and Gerri’s wedding. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Wayzata Community Church. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at noon. A light lunch will be served at 1 p.m. A private burial will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude or Alzheimer’s Association.
