Wayzata

Mertha Ann Flaten (nee Johnson)

Flaten, Mertha A., nee Johnson, age 97, of Wayzata, formerly of Burnsville, MN, went home to heaven on September 5th .  Mertha is preceded in death by her husband Nordahl (2013), two brothers Ralph and Glen Johnson of Upsala, MN and a sister Phyllis Norton of Enterprise, AL. She is survived by her children Sonja (Fred) Showalter, St. Paul, MN, and Mark (Sharon) Flaten, Wayzata, MN, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a sister Doris Dybing of Lanesboro, MN.

Mertha was born in Upsala, MN and graduated from Upsala High School in 1943.  After graduation she moved to Minneapolis where she studied to become a dental assistant.  Following the war and while working for a dentist in Minneapolis she was introduced to a handsome and charming patient by her boss who thought this fellow was the perfect man for her.  He was right, Nord and Mertha were married in 1950 and spent 63 years together.

In 1973 they bought a farm in southeastern Minnesota and spent many trips back and forth for a few days at a time.  This was their hobby, where they tended to a large garden, all the while being able to see one of her sisters who lived in the area.

After Nord died in 2013, she remained in her home until 2015 when she moved to Wayzata in a senior community to be closer to family.  She enjoyed her Bible study classes, exercise classes and getting her hair done.  After seven years of independent living, it was time for more care, and she was fortunate to remain in the complex.

Mertha was a hard worker, loved seeing family and having many family dinners, always making sure there was plenty of food for everyone.
