Mary Jo Burt Peterson, 66, of Maple Grove peacefully ended her dance with ALS on July 17, 2022, with family by her side.
Mary Jo was born February 8, 1956, in St. Cloud, MN to Mary Ann and Richard Burt, where she grew into her beautiful, fun-loving self. She often shared fond memories of her days as a drum and bugle corps majorette, synchronized swimmer, and diver. She had lifelong passions for music, swimming, gardening, and cycling. She loved a good game, a witty joke, and her expressive eyes could speak volumes. As a 38-year employee of Ryerson, she regularly exercised her gifts for teaching and problem-solving and was often referred to as the office mom. She will forever be remembered for her compassionate, empathetic nature and her resilient, fun spirit. There is no denying she was an angel walking among us and will always be our guiding light.
Mary Jo married the love of her life, Rick, on September 9, 1978, and together they raised three wonderful children—Lindsay (Charlie Lucas), Derek, and Tess. Others cherishing her memory are sisters—Nell (Curt) Hanson, Deb, Sarah, and Carrie (Tom Stenger) Burt; brothers—Bob (Sue), Steve (Ida), Paul (Helen Ng), Chris (Sue), Charlie (Renee), and Ben (Regina) Burt; along with many other beloved family members and friends. Welcoming her to heaven are her mother and father, Mary Ann and Richard; her brother, David; and her son, Nicholas. We thank The ALS Association as well as Dr. David Walk and his staff at the University of Minnesota for their exceptional support and guidance since May 2018. We also thank all of Mary Jo’s wonderful nurses and other healthcare providers.
Celebration of life will be held Thursday, August 11. Visitation will be at 9:30 AM, followed by memorial mass at 10:30 AM at St. Vincent de Paul in Brooklyn Park. Eulogies and luncheon celebration to immediately follow at Elm Creek Park Reserve Chalet in Maple Grove. Donations can be made to The ALS Association or JDRF.
