Mary C. Chatelaine

Born July 3, 1927, Mary Catherine Chatelaine passed peacefully on May 15, 2020.  Preceded in death by her loving husband David, parents William and Hilda Tegeder, and daughter Mary Anne Student (nee Chatelaine).  She was also preceded in death by her five older brothers who always called her “Sis”: Fr. Vincent, Robert (Barbara), Clarence (Ruth), Leroy (Ruth), and William. Survived by daughter Anne Chatelaine and sons David (Kathy) Chatelaine and John (Sally) Chatelaine, son-in-law Michael Student, sister-in-law Mary Tegeder, and brother-in-law Eugene (Norma) Chatelaine. Mary was known for never forgetting a birthday, especially those of her loved ones whom she is also survived by, including grandchildren Katie (Chris Chatelaine-Samsen), Amy, Hannah (Mike Howe), Patrick, Haley, DJ (Carrie Smisek), Jacquelyn, and Luke, and great-granddaughter Junia.  Mary was cherished as “Aunt Sis” by many loving nieces and nephews, including being godmother to Nan Peterson (nee Tegeder), Tom Tegeder, and Jon Lahti. A proud resident of Northeast Minneapolis, Mary attended St. Anthony Catholic School and St. Boniface Catholic Church, working at the North Central Bank and marrying David on May 4, 1957. A dedicated wife and mother, Mary raised her children in Brooklyn Park and became a para-professional at Edgewood Elementary School working in the library and making many friends among the teachers and staff.  Her later years found her at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, volunteering and helping at St. Therese of New Hope Senior Living, where her kindness and patient demeanor were always welcome.  Mary demonstrated the special grace of being a gentle woman and will be missed deeply by the people she encountered during her time with us.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for the family at the Church of St. Aphonsus, Brooklyn Center with burial at Gethsemane Cemetery. There will be a public celebration of Mary’s life arranged at a later time.
