Marlys Gale Hawkins (Anderson), aged 94, passed away on August 11, 2024, in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Born on April 23, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was a spirited individual known for her fierce independence and impeccable style.
Marlys spent her early years in Minneapolis before venturing to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 22. It was there she met her future husband, Charles J. Hawkins, Sr., while working at the Bank of America in Hollywood. After marrying and starting a family, they returned to Minnesota in 1963 to be closer to her family. Marlys took pride in her Swedish heritage, a legacy of her grandparents who emigrated from Sweden.
A devoted homemaker as the children were growing up, Marlys later worked as a bookkeeper and in Accounts Payable/Receivable for several different companies & organizations. She attended Patrick Henry High School and studied for a year at the University of Minnesota, taking the streetcar to campus. Her religious life was rooted in her long-standing memberships at Highland Park Presbyterian Church and later at Valley Community Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Marlys's hobbies included golf, bowling, square dancing, bridge, sewing, word games, and especially shopping. Marlys was an immaculate housekeeper and took joy in sewing clothes for herself, her daughter, and her daughter's dolls, and preparing homemade meals, always ensuring a treat was ready for her children after school while asking about their day.
She is survived by her son, Charlie Hawkins, Jr.; daughter, April Kovacovich (Don); grandsons, Charles Kovacovich (fiancee Ashly Larson) and Anthony Kovacovich (Missy Zellmer); sister Janice Scofield; nephews, Paul and Mark Scofield; and niece, Julie Viken (Kevin). Also Kovacovich extended family. Marlys was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles J. Hawkins, Sr., and her parents, Enoch and Myrtle Anderson.
