Marjorie "Marge" Smith

Marjorie Lou Smith of Minnetonka, formerly of Maple Grove and Mound, departed for her Heavenly home on July 21, 2020 at the age of 90. Marge (Peggy to many) was born and raised in Superior, Wisconsin. She graduated from Superior Central High School in 1947. Peggy met her husband, Wayne, at the telephone company in Superior, Wisconsin and they were happily married for 55 years. She was an Air Force wife, and faithfully supported her husband through his years in service, and as he earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees. Faith and family were the foundations of their long life together. Marge devoted her life to raising her children. Through the years, her passions included golf, skiing, cheering for the Vikings, playing games with family and friends, and traveling abroad with her husband and her children. One of Nana’s favorite memories was of taking each of her grandchildren on a special trip with Nana and Papa. She also enjoyed being an enthusiastic cheerleader at many athletic and musical events through the years with her children and grandchildren. She found great joy being a part of her women’s group at Wayzata Free Church where they continually worked on service projects to help women and children across the world. She played bridge for over a half century with her special Mound friends and, in more recent years, played Mahjong frequently. Marge’s Mahjong and bridge friends were a lifeline for her.

Marge loved her fruits and veggies, her Russell Stover candy, her delicious fruit slices, and the famous Woullet’s chocolate coconut macaroon, which was one of her final delights. She shared a love of ice cream with Wayne, and she enjoyed a Culver’s turtle sundae in those last days.

Marge loved motorcycle and train rides when she was a young woman. She had quite the crush on Clark Gable (but only in Gone With the Wind). She loved music: Englebert Humperdink, Andy Williams, The Glenn Miller Band, Lawrence Welk, and Bing Crosby. She was talented musically as well, playing the piano and organ. She cherished her grand piano.

She is preceded in death by her adoring husband of 55 years, Wayne, father, Erling Olsen, her sweet mother, Olga Olsen, and her brothers Eugene and Kenneth. She is loved and will be deeply missed by her children Craig (Jonlyn), Julie Peterson (Mitch), Lisa Kuffel (Craig), and Brian (Mandy). Her precious grandchildren brought endless joy to Nana: Kelsey, Taylor, Mick & fiancé Molly, Lauren, Dani, Haley, Alex, Riley & Kiera. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, & other wonderful relatives and friends. Nana dreamed of the day she would become a great-grandmother, but she will have that joy looking down from Heaven.
