Leonard Stephen Rabatin, age 91, of Minneapolis, died peacefully at home on July 29, 2021. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Joanne (Wallerius); his children, Joe (Sarah), Jeff, Michael, Mary Stahl (Robert), Steve (Amy) and Anne Van Deventer (Bart); and his grandchildren, Alex, Simon, Oscar, Harper, Hudson, Andrew, Elizabeth, Carolyne, Julianna and Lauren.
Lenny was born to Stephen and Mary (Lenart) Rabatin, Slovak immigrants, on June 18, 1930. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings; Anne (Chet) Cisek, John (Barbara) Rabatin, and brother-in-law, Mike Pawlyshyn. He is survived by his sisters; Mary Jane (Joe) Doll and Barbara (Mike) Pawlyshyn and his brother, Tom Rabatin, along with many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Lenny spent his career managing the restaurant, founded by his parents in 1941 as the Northeast Ice Cream Bar. Renamed Rabatin’s Café, this long-standing neighborhood gathering spot served the northeast community for over 50 years. Lenny’s legacy is found in his work ethic, commitment to Joanne and their family, and devotion to his Catholic faith.
A visitation will be Friday August 13, 2021, from 5-8 PM at Gearty-Demore Robbinsdale Chapel, 3888 W. Broadway. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday August 14, 2021, at 11:30 AM at Ss Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, 1301 2 nd St. NE Minneapolis. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minneapolis. The family respectfully asks that masks be worn indoors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ss Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.
The Rabatin family is grateful to Mayo Clinic, especially Drs. Mark Davis, Dave Midthun, Bob Albright, Dan Borgeson and to North Memorial Health Hospice especially Kiki Erickson-Kline, RN and Erica Jossund, LGSW for their kindness and outstanding care.
