Lana Sung Hom

Lana Sung Hom (Lew Ngan Ling) of Eagan passed away peacefully at home on May 6, 2024, at 101 years old.

Lana was born in 1922 in Taishan, Guangdong Province, China. She taught in the school owned and operated by her family. She met her husband, Harry Sung Hom, and they were married in 1940. Due to immigration policy and political upheaval, they were separated for several years. Lana moved to Hong Kong before she was reunited with Harry in the United States, living in Oakland, California. They were blessed with their two oldest children, Edwin and Sophia, while living in Oakland. In 1961, they moved to Aurora, Illinois and joined Harry’s brothers, owning and operating The Strand Restaurant. They lived in Aurora and had three more children, Kathy, Sylvia, and Calvin, before moving to Burnsville, Minnesota in 1975.

In Burnsville, Lana and Harry owned and operated the Canton Restaurant with Lana’s sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Victor Leung. They sold the restaurant in 1983 and retired, eagerly looking forward to spending more time with family. Sadly, Harry passed away suddenly in 1986.

While operating the restaurant required long hours, Lana enjoyed interacting with customers. But her greatest joy was always her family. This joy also expanded beyond the immediate family and holidays were spent in large extended-family gatherings with too much food and plenty of fun, including an annual Christmas Talent Show. Treasured highlights of her life were two extended-family cruises and a trip to China.

In 2016, Lana suffered a stroke, requiring continuous care from her family and dedicated caregivers.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry, she is survived by their children, Edwin (Maria Wang), Sophia, Kathy (John Huang), Sylvia (William Lim), and Calvin; grandchildren, Justin (Cindy Tsao), Trevor, Whitney, Tyler, Braden, and Ashley; niece Alice Leung, (Ted Woo) and nephews Nelson (Laurie Schmidt), Ron, and Tony (Sherry Tsao), and their families.

Her family will always be grateful for her great love for them and are sustained by their sweet memories and love for her.
