June Carolyn (Cooper) Starn, age 89 of Maple Grove, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2021, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Despite having Alzheimer’s, June remained kind-hearted, loving, and gracious throughout her last years.
June was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She is survived by daughter, Susan (James) Nystrom; grandchildren, Megan (AJ) Syler, Erin (Chris) Fleming and Josh; brother, Grant Cooper; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. June is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, of 51 years, and parents, Walter and Mildred Cooper.
June was born on January 30 th , 1932 in Minneapolis during a good old-fashioned Minnesota blizzard. She grew up in Minneapolis, graduated from North High School in 1949, and worked many years after to save for college. June received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Macalester College in 1960 and furthered her career by receiving her licensure in special education.
June met Richard at a college dance in 1959 and they were married on April 9, 1960. Throughout the years, Richard and June enjoyed traveling, golfing, and skiing. They also spent many wonderful summers at their cabin in northern Minnesota and winters in Arizona. And of course, these times became extra special for them when they spent time with the grandkids. Whether reading books, planting flowers, or going on outings, Grandma June never missed the opportunity to share her time with her grandchildren whenever she could.
June was a social butterfly, making new friendships wherever she went while cherishing her old friendships throughout her life. June was part of “The Club,” a group of life-long friends from junior high school that met every month to have late-night gab sessions simply to talk, and talk, and talk!
June served as a devoted special education teacher in the Anoka-Hennepin School District and volunteered countless hours at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. But as many know, nothing brought her more joy than being with family. She loved being a mother and being a grandmother even more. June was extremely proud of her family and leaves behind a legacy of beautiful memories.
Knowing the love and support of all, it is our wish to keep you safe due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns. Therefore, a private service and interment to be held at Lakewood Cemetery. To honor June’s love for education, memorials preferred to the Wastebasket Revue (www.wastebasketrevue.org), in gratitude.
