Josephine H. Hodges

December 2, 1938 — March 5, 2020

Josephine H. Hodges

Josephine Harriet Wilder was born December 2, 1938 in Canton, South Dakota to parents Florence and Floyd Wilder.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Hodges. She is survived by her daughter, Marie Miers; sons, Richard, Dwight and Daryl Hodges; grandchildren, Sheri Hodges, Jason and Julie Miers; and 4 great grandchildren.

Josephine grew up in Wolsey, South Dakota with her brothers, Franklin and Jack Wilder, and her sister, Diane Fischer.  She played the trumpet in high school and would fondly recount stories of playing with the band at local Basketball games.   She also enjoyed going to barn dances that were hosted by Lawrence Welk – way before his hit T.V. show was even a thing.

On December 28, 1958 Josephine married Edward Earl Hodges in Huron, South Dakota.  The two moved to Oakland, California and a year later gave birth to their first child, Marie.  Shortly after Marie was born they made their way to Minneapolis and there had 3 boys, Richard, Dwight and Daryl Hodges.

Josephine worked for the Robbinsdale School District for 17 years as a Para Professional (she was the Playground Lady).  In 1990 Josephine took a job as a salesperson at Montgomery Ward, she retired from both jobs in 1999.  She was an avid bowler, loved to crotchet, scrapbook and spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Josephine was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in December 2018, by the time the cancer was found it had spread to her lungs and lymph nodes.  At that time she was given five months, but in true fashion, her strength and grit kept her with us for another year and a half.   Josephine passed in her sleep on March 5, 2020 at the age of 81.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 12 at 11:00 AM, visitation starting at 10:00 AM and luncheon/social gathering to follow, all at Edinbrook Church, 4300 Edinbrook Parkway, Brooklyn Park, MN  55443.  Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.  Memorials preferred to Minnesota Cancer Society .
