Known by “Jack”, he was active in baseball, football, and basketball throughout his childhood. A 1953 graduate of Roosevelt H.S. in Virginia, he achieved all-conference awards in football and played in the 1952 North-South all-star game as a center and linebacker. He participated in the 1952 state basketball tournament with the “Blue Devils” (H.S.). He then attended Virginia Junior College for 2 years and was named all-conference football team in his sophomore year. In baseball, he was primarily a pitcher and played many years playing town ball with the Virginia Rangers.

Jack enlisted in the USMC and served from 1956-58, honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. After the service, he attended UMD, graduating with a B.S. in education. He then taught in the Columbia Heights School District from 1960-1993, Elementary Education.

Jack was an avid sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Twins. He loved to fish and, especially in his younger days, hunting.

He will be remembered as a “People Person” with a great sense of humor and who especially loved children. In his later years, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's many activities and being with them “at the lake”.

He was an avid reader, enjoying novels and American history. In their retirement, Jack and Betty were able to travel to many historic American places, in addition to numerous trips as snowbirds- Florida and Arizona.
