John passed away at his home in Eden Prairie on December 31, 2020, at the age of 95.
John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Ellen; son Steve (Patty), daughter Barb (Craig) Larson and son Bob (Jennie); grandchildren Kimberly Larson, Megan (Dave) Prochniak, Amy (Alex) Glitsos, John (Anne) McCulloch and Sean McCulloch; great-grandchildren Georgia, Miles, Adam, Emma, and Maren. He was preceded in death by great-grandson Quinn.
John was born January 8, 1925 in Scottsburg, Indiana, the only son, among four daughters, of John and Fay McCulloch. He was active in Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Immediately upon graduation from high school in June 1943 John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was in the Marine 6th Division and saw action in the invasions and captures of Guam and Okinawa, including the fighting at Sugar Loaf Hill. Like many of his fellow WWII veterans, after the end of the war he quietly came home, hung up his uniform, and got on with his life.
In 1947 John enrolled at Purdue, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. While in college he met Ellen Keller and they were married in 1951. Over the years they moved at least sixteen times, living in Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, and Texas. After college, John started working for Carnation and then had a long career with Pillsbury in plant management and logistics. In 1978 John became a partner in Unit Distribution and opened and managed their logistics operations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area until his retirement.
John was a successful man as he possessed the things that mattered most to him – a close and solid family, respect of his friends and others in his community, and success in his business, especially going above and beyond in taking care of his customers. John took great pride in his family and their accomplishments. He will be missed dearly and remembered fondly by all his family and friends.
