John Paul Kuziej

John Kuziej was born September 5, 1922 to Bruno and Lillian (Rusnak) Kuziej in Phillips, Wisconsin. Soon afterward he was received as a child of God in Holy Baptism in a Phillips Lutheran Church.

During his childhood, John attended elementary and high school in Phillips. It was in high school that he met the love of his life, Juanita Williams. The couple were married August 10, 1941 in a Lutheran Parsonage.

During the Second World War, John and Juanita lived in Chicago where John worked in a defense plant.

Towards the end of the war, they moved back to Phillips. There John worked for the local A & P grocery store. He was soon transferred to Park Falls, Wisconsin. When that store burned down, in 1949, he was transferred to Ironwood, Michigan.

In 1957, John was promoted to store manager and sent to Hayward, Wisconsin. A short time later, he was made manager of the Reedsburg, Wisconsin store. Then, in 1961, he was sent back to manage the Hayward store, where the A & P would be building a new supermarket.

However, A & P soon left Wisconsin. So, in 1966, John began his career with the Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Company. This career move made it necessary for him to move his family to Menomonie, Wisconsin. And after a successful eleven years in Menomonie, in 1977, the family moved to Winona, Minnesota where John continued to work for Lutheran Brotherhood. Finally, in 1984, John retired.

John and Nita enjoyed many years of retirement in Winona. In 2011, when they approached 90 years of age, they decided to move into an Eagan, Minnesota assisted living apartment home.

On July 17, 2014, John lost the love of his life, Juanita, when she died.

When life became more difficult for John, he moved in with his daughter, Mary Konicek and her family, in Maplewood, Minnesota. It was there he lived until he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in Maplewood.

John died in the Good Samaritan Home Saturday, August 18, 2018.  He was 95 years of age.

All throughout his life, John was known as a faithful churchman. He served on church councils at Salem Lutheran, Ironwood, and First Lutheran Church, Hayward. During his life, he was also a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Phillips, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Reedsburg, Peace Lutheran Church, Menomonie and Central Lutheran Church, Winona.

John also served the Menomonie community by being a member of the City Council. John was best known as a loving husband and family man. He and his wife took many trips to Hawaii, often taking their children and grandchildren with them.

Preceded in death include John’s mother and father; brother, Walter; sisters, Mary, Irene, Dorothy and daughter-in-law, Jeannette Kuziej.

John is survived by his children, Reverend Kenneth (Carolyne) Kuziej, Thomas (Susan) Kuziej, Reverend John Kuziej, Mary Konicek, Nancy (Steve) Walquist, Robert (Janet) Kuziej;  sister, Virginia Gasch, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews & friends.
