J. Michael Egan (age 79) of Minneapolis, MN, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family, on March 19, 2025 after a short but courageous battle with a rare form of cancer.
He was born September 19, 1945, and was the last baby born at Langley Field, VA Military Hospital following VJ Day. He came home to Minneapolis, where he resided the rest of his life. He graduated from St. Austin's Grade School and then went on to graduate from De La Salle High School. Mike attended and graduated from The University of Minnesota School of Business and was a proud brother of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Post graduation he went on to become a teacher at St. Hubert's Catholic School while he attended night law school at the William Mitchell School of Law. He graduated number one in his class and went into Personal Injury law and was a partner at the Eckman, Strandness and Egan Law Firm until his retirement.
His passions in life were travel with his wife, Gwen, and golf with his college buddies. He married his wife, Gwen, in 1970 and would have celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary this November. He also considers himself one of the founders of Fantasy Football. "The Commmish", as he was known, where he founded a league in 1978 with his close friends and family that is still running to this day. He also was a founder of a yearly Las Vegas trip with a close group of friends who they aptly named themselves "The Conventioneers." That group is still continuing a yearly trip to Las Vegas to this day for golf, gambling and shenanigans.
Their only son Brian came to them later in life in 1984. So of course he had to get a golf club in his sons hands early in his life. One of his fondest memories of his life is when he got his only Hole-in-One at the Theodore Wirth Par 3 and Brian was so excited that he ran and leapt into his arms. He loved golfing with his son, traveling the world with his family and watching his son pursue his dream of becoming a Captain for Delta Air Lines. He also shared much love with his daughter-in-law, Amy, and taking their dog Ruby Sioux on walks during lunch when they were both at work.
Mike was preceded in death by his father Robert L Egan, mother Rose M Egan, and sister-in-law Linda (Weiss) Egan.
Mike is survived by his wife Gwen L Egan, son Brian N Egan, daughter-in-law Amy (Molin) Egan. Siblings Mary Egan Hunziker (Thomas), Trish Skaja (Jim), Bob Egan, and Thomas J Egan. Along with many nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the gracious and loving care of the Methodist Hospital Hospice Services, especially Nurse Rick. In closing we would like to share one of his favorite quotes "What's the only way you can eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
Services for Mike will begin with Visitation at Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale Chapel Wednesday April 2nd 4pm-7pm. Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, April 3 at the Basilica of St. Mary, 1600 Hennepin Ave S. 11am Visitation and 12pm Mass. Procession to St Mary's Cemetery to follow for family, followed by a Celebration of Life at Minnesota Valley Country Club, Bloomington, MN at 3pm on Thursday April 3rd.
