John “Yiannis” Efstathiou, age 71, passed away August 13, 2020 at home surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
John was born in Serres, Greece to Dimitrios and Maria Efstathiou. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from The Aristotelian University in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1973, John came to the United States with his wife, Meropi, as a PhD student at the University of Minnesota for Food Science and Nutrition.
He had a prolific career as a scientist and innovator, introducing countless food products to the global market. He held dozens of patents in his name and earned numerous industry awards, including the prestigious Cargill President’s Award. John loved the best things in life: family, the sun, the sea, vegetable gardens, tavernas, grilled fish, ouzo, football (soccer), backgammon with friends, coffee with Baileys, and his mustache. Most of all, he was devoted to his wife and his children. He was, as they say in Greek, a real ’palikari’ – an honorable, caring Greek man.
John is preceded in death by parents, Dimitrios and Maria.
He is survived by wife of 47 years, Meropi; daughter, Maria (Zachary Pass); son, Dimitrios (Misa Numano); three grandchildren, Emi, Cadmus, Zoe; and brother, Christos Efstathiou.
