John Herges Dahlmeier of St. Louis Park passed away peacefully on February 27, 2021 at the age of 85.
John was born on May 14, 1935 in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was the oldest child of Willis J. and Helen (Herges) Dahlmeier. John is survived by his children John F. Dahlmeier, Julie Erickson and husband Darin, David Dahlmeier and wife Suzy and Katy Matvey and husband David, his grandchildren Jack, Owen, Elizabeth Erickson, Maggie and Nicholas Matvey, Cindy Flemal and Shawna Werner and his sister Suzanne Rhomberg of Bryan, TX and sister-in-law Jane Dahlmeier of West Palm Beach, FL. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gloria Werner and his brother Fred Dahlmeier.
John graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Iowa. He received a B.S. degree in architectural engineering in 1958 from the University of Nebraska. Following graduation, he was commissioned an officer in in the U.S. Navy for four years reaching the rank of Lt. Junior Grade. Following his service, he attended University of Minnesota, graduating in 1964 with a Master of Science in civil engineering.
While at the University of Minnesota, John met, and then married, Cecelia Jennewein and they raised four children together. John worked as an engineer at firms in Aberdeen, SD and Minneapolis before starting his own firm, J.H. Dahlmeier Engineering, Inc., which he ran until he retired. He also served as the president of the MN Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
In 1991, John married Gloria Werner and they had over 25 years of marriage before she passed away in September 2019. They enjoyed many activities together, including winters in Anna Maria Island, Florida, many sailing trips and sailing with the Northern Lights Sailing Club. John also was a member of a men’s group for three decades and those friendships brought him much joy and support throughout the years.
John had high integrity and a strong work ethic that he also instilled in his children. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease about the time of his retirement and for nearly 20 years he approached it with the same hard work and determination. His last day of alertness was spent with family, enjoying a cheeseburger and ice cream and watching Gopher hockey – all things he enjoyed.

John will be interred with Dahlmeier ancestors in Pipestone, MN.
