Joanne (Jo) Senander passed away September 3rd, after a brief battle with cancer, at the age of 86.
She is survived by her husband, Don; children, Sam (Jeff) Gundry, Suzie (Mike) White, Terry Senander, Patti (Dan) Morseth, Kady Senander Smith and Kriss Senander; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A retired special educator, Jo was a tireless volunteer at STEP, at church, and anywhere she felt needed. She was a fierce advocate and worker for social justice; equal rights, the environment, and for the marginalized of society. Her crowning achievement was the Thanksgiving Day Free Store, an annual event she started 22 years ago and for which she was honored as one of KARE 11's Eleven Who Care in 2009. With husband Don always at her side, and her small army of volunteers, she gathered used jackets, warm clothes and basic essentials to give to the homeless population of South Minneapolis each Thanksgiving Day. She helped a lot of people. She touched a lot of people. She loved everybody - especially the great-grands. Her favorite holiday was Halloween and her witch impersonation scared even her own grandkids! She modeled courage, strength, generosity, gratitude, service, forgiveness, and unconditional love. It's a high bar she's set. Rest easy, Mom. You've earned it.
