It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of J. Leonard Frame, 95, on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Len, a long-time resident of Golden Valley, was an aeronautical engineer, visionary business leader and entrepreneur founding several local businesses. He had a passion for fishing with his family and friends, was a world traveler, choir leader, and most importantly, a loving son, caring husband, and dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Len was born on May 24, 1924, the son of Leonard and Florence (Holt) Frame, and raised in South St. Paul, Minnesota where he graduated high school at the young age of 15. He studied aeronautical engineering at the University of Minnesota and, after graduating at 19, served in World War II. In 1944, Len married Dorothy Mae Gadde in Bemidji, Minnesota. They enjoyed a wonderful 66 years of marriage until Dorothy’s passing in 2011. To this union were born five children, Peggy, Susan, Douglas, Julie and Jennifer. Len married Virginia Rovainen, of St. Paul, Minnesota, in 2014, and they spent the last years of his life together. As a visionary engineer with an entrepreneurial spirit, in 1952 at the age of 28, Len founded FluiDyne Engineering Corporation, serving as its President & CEO until the sale of its Aero Division in 1993. Following FluiDyne, Phoenix Solutions Co was established in 1993. Len served as President and CEO for the first five years, and then Chairman and CFO for the next 21 years.
Len is survived by his wife, Virginia, and children Peggy Oberfeld, Susan Frame (Scott Henderson), Douglas (Bev) Frame, Julie Frame, and Jennifer (Jim) Takats. Also mourning his loss are grandchildren Mike (Carolyn) Oberfeld, Angie Sheppard, Sara Frame, Bridget (Troy) Fey and Eric Frame, along with great-grandchildren Ben Oberfeld, Molly Sheppard and Carter Fey.
A long time church choir leader and member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church, Len will be remembered and celebrated in a service at the church (3100 Lilac Drive, Golden Valley) on November 2, 2:00 p.m. with visitation at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Valley Community Presbyterian Church or Alzheimer’s Association.
