November 10, 1939 – December 30, 2024
Jerry was born the oldest of four children and grew up in Newark, New Jersey. He loved the game of baseball and played every opportunity he could, and his dream was to play in the major leagues. During the summers he could be found catching a train into New York City to watch his beloved New York Giants play baseball.
After High School, Jerry joined the Air Force where he served for 20 years with one tour in Vietnam. While in the Air Force, Jerry served as an Air Policeman, a radar technician and site leader and finally as one of the early computer programmers. While stationed in England, he met and married the love of his life, Ann and they were married for 64 wonderful years. They eventually settled in San Antonio, Texas after his retirement from the Air Force, then in 1992 they moved to Minnesota where he eventually retired from United Healthcare.
Following his career in the Air Force, Jerry had a storied career developing computer systems and programs for Tesoro, Harte Hanks and United Healthcare (UHC). He still is fondly remembered as Father Cosmos at UHC. While working full time and raising a family, he attended San Antonio College and received his Associate's Degree in computer science.
The most important thing to Jerry was spending time and making memories with his family. His daughter and grandchildren were the pride of his life. Jerry very much enjoyed traveling with his wife Ann. His favorite trips were to Italy for the food and historic sites. He also enjoyed the many traveling adventures with his daughter and grandchildren. His love of all things rail highlighted most of the travel adventures, as there was always a historic operating railroad or museum along the route or at the destination.
His love of sports was a large part of his early life with the New York baseball and football Giants. He passed this love on to his daughter and grandchildren through coaching his daughter’s softball and basketball teams and his grandchildren’s baseball and softball teams. Jerry enjoyed listening to music spanning several decades and genres and attending musical theater productions and concerts and this love will continue on with Debra, Andrew and Becca.
Jerry loved his pets, and we truly believe that Cindy, Ramsey, Lucky, Tigger, Mitzi, Pepper, and Stitch were there to meet him at the pearly gates.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Hilda and Abraham Weinstein and his brother Bill.
Jerry is survived by his wife Ann (Rendle) Weinstein; brothers Bert and Larry; daughter Debra Podzimek (Mark); grandchildren Andrew and Rebecca; along with other extended family members.
