James Myron Larson Jr (aka Jim, JR), was born April 17, 1958, in Owatonna, MN, the eldest child of James Myron Larson Sr, and Judith A. Jacobsen.
He grew up in New Hope along with his brother and two sisters. He served for life as big brother and protector. Tall and skinny, white-blond Jim got rag-dolled on the wrestling team, but found himself a love for singing and the stage. He was an intelligent student with wonderful friends (and some wild times) at Cooper High. After graduation he attended North Hennepin Community College and the University of New Mexico. All along, he developed his principles of discipline and diligence. He joined his dad in the hardscrabble world of road construction with C.S. McCrossan.
Jim settled in for the long term when he met the love of his life and his rock, Shirley Sue Conley. He was building Interstate 94 in North Minneapolis and she worked at a nearby convenience store. At break time, he’d stop at her register to buy his favorite chocolate milk and Twinkies. Bashful, he eventually won her love with charm and that big Larson smile. The two were married and soon came daughter Teresa Marjorie and later, Jimmy III. Life was busy. Jim and Shirley worked hard while providing lots of love for Teri, Jimmy, and friends and family. The happy memories include road trips, vacations, and fun at the cabin.
Jim was well-respected in his working life, from humble laborer to superintendent and project manager. He ran crews with a steady, efficient hand at Hardrives Inc. His character and expertise were indispensable to his employers. The demand for his leadership brought him to Killmer Electric for the final 22 years of his 46 years in the construction industry.
The back nine of Jim’s life was also spent instructing youth. He taught Sunday School, directed church plays, and coached softball. He loved to attend the sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He discovered a long-term passion for the Scouting program, serving as Den Leader and Scoutmaster among many roles official and unofficial. With the Scouts, Jim would forge many friendships with deep bonds maintained throughout the decades.
He loved hiking, camping, and golfing. A dedicated Minnesota sports fan, he cheered on the Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins, and United FC. To his family’s amusement, he greatly enjoyed watching professional wrestling. Jim and Shirley travelled throughout the world. They loved golfing together in Florida. Most of all, he was a dedicated family man and grandfather, a friend to many, and a helpful asset to every community with which he was involved.
We were heartbroken to say goodbye to Jim on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. He was 66. Preceded in death by his father Jim Sr, mother Judy, infant son William James, sister-in-law, Laurie, and parents-in-law William and Marjorie Conley. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley, daughter Teresa, son James III (Angela), grandsons Soren & Boden Swanson, Theodore & Charles Larson, and granddaughter Elsie; sisters Jodi (Owen) Coit, Jill; brother Jeffrey (fiance' Angie); aunts and many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and a host of dear friends.
We honor his memory for the great impact he had on so, so many lives. Big mustached smile, huge hugs, endearing playfulness, loving heart and giving spirit. We will forever miss him.
