James Philip Gehrey Jr., 91, of Spring Park, MN died of heart failure on Tuesday, February 9,2021.
He was born in Minneapolis in July of 1930 to James P. and Mary K. Gehrey. Jim grew up in Morningside and graduated from St. Louis Park High School, after which he attended the University of Minnesota. Jimmy was an honorably discharged Korean War era disabled veteran of the Army Signal Corps. After his two years of service, he started his career as a radio technician, which culminated in a 20-year span with the Hennepin County Sheriff Office communications section, where he made many dear friends. He held general class radio amateur license K0AZK for over 60 years. During his 45 years of retirement, he spent time traveling, bicycling, hiking, cross country skiing, sailing, iceboating, gardening, and helping others with his time, talent, and tools. He was a lover of both classical music and an occasional beer.
Preceded in death by his sisters, Rosemary and Georgianna. He is survived by his two nieces, three nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
Family graveside service with military honors is at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
