Irene H. Gleason

Irene Helen (Jesh), better known as Nana, was born on June 21, 1934 in Albany, MN where she grew up. She was the 4th of 5 children to Roman and Dora Jesh, sister to Doris, Rita, Ray and Hertz. She attended school in Albany, and earned her Registered Nursing degree at St. Cloud School of Nursing. Irene met Larry Gleason through mutual friends. She had a bus ticket home on a Friday night, and at the urging of a girlfriend, missed her bus and stayed to meet “this nice guy.” Larry and Irene were married on October 29, 1955 at Church of the Seven Dolars in Albany, and were married for 43 years until Larry died in February, 1999.

Larry and Irene had 7 children, 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Irene loved to play cards, was an avid MN Twins fans,a Girl Scout leader and a constant fan in the stands for her children and grandchildren’s events. Irene became a golf enthusiast, but started out unwillingly. Her kids remembered when she and her friend Eleanor joined a league,, but sometimes they went to the golf course, and decided to go shopping or out to lunch instead, or were relieved when it was raining on a golf day. She however, stuck with it, and came to enjoy it, participating in couples leagues with Dad, and Women’s leagues. Irene also was a trooper, and went snow skiing with her family, despite not being a fan of the sport. She’d be disappointed when each child graduated from the bunny hill, but saw it as a family event, and enjoyed the time together, be it in the chalet or out on the slopes.

Irene was very involved in her church, St. Vincent de Paul, was a wonderful entertainer, and her house was always decorated, and she made every occasion special.. All new members to her family were treated as her own, she enjoyed traveling and spending her winters in Arizona. Irene was known for always having a full candy dish, loving Andy Williams music, and never going out without her lipstick.

Irene was known as a true fighter the last six years of her life. She survived cancer, a heart attack, a mild stroke, and influenza A to name a few. She was tested 11 times for Covid-19 and vowed that would not take her. In the end, her body tired, and she is now happily looking down on all of us. “Well done good and faithful servant.” We will miss Irene, and feel her with us always.

Survived by children, Joe Gleason (Peggy), Terry Derksen (Brad), Pat Gleason (Sue), Tom Gleason (Stephanie), Anne Jungwirth (Tim), Tony Gleason (Victoria) & Diane Morri; grandchildren, Lauren Garvin (Jordan), Lindsay Calof (Alex), Andrew Derksen (Taylor), Carolyn Derksen, Adam Gleason, Hannah Gleason, Blake Gleason, Julia Gleason, Jacob Jungwirth, Molly Jungwirth, Daniel Jungwirth, Nicholas Gleason, Matthew Gleason, Jack Morri, Joe Morri, Sophia Morri; great-grandchild, Elle Irene Garvin; brother, Harold Jesh (Annette); and nieces, nephews and many friends.
