Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on 6 June 1939, Gary graduated from Washington High School in 1957. He enlisted in the Air National Guard and upon completion of basic training he moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he worked as a machinist for John Deere. In 1961 he moved to Minneapolis and worked as a machinist and attended Dunwoody Institute where he excelled in Tool Design and Plastic Mold Design. In 1964 he co-founded Precision Engineering, and he served as President of the company until 1994 when they sold it and Gary retired. An avid outdoorsman, Gary loved to hunt, especially waterfowl, pheasant, deer, antelope, and elk, often with his brother-in-law, Bill Kowalke and son, Justin, not only in Minnesota, but also Nebraska, Montana, and Colorado. For many years he maintained a boat in both Minnesota and Florida and spent many days on Lake Mille Lacs and Lake Michigan fishing walleye and salmon or deep-sea fishing in the Atlantic with family and friends. Gary moved to the Medicine Lake peninsula in 1972, and served as the first volunteer officer of the Medicine Lake police department. He was a member of the Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, and after retirement divided his time between Marathon, Florida and Plymouth. During his last decade he struggled valiantly against the ravages of Parkinson's Disease. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen; children Mya (Alonzo) Hatchette of Orlando, Florida, and Justin Klauson of Medicine Lake; grandchildren, Myzel, Mabon, and Myanna Hatchette; sister, Linda (Jan) Miller of Sioux Falls; brothers-in-law, James Kowalke (Darlene), Kim Kowalke (Elizabeth); sister-in-law, Vernice Kowalke; and many nieces, nephews, and grand/great nieces and nephews.
