Eugene Joseph Roney was born on July 14th, 1930, to Joseph and Mary Roney. The eldest of seven children, he grew up in Minneapolis and attended Ascension Catholic School and DeLaSalle High School. He graduated from the University of St Thomas. He married Geraldine Ann Early, in 1954. This past June, Gene and Gerry celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Their world revolved around their children, Maureen, Mark, Don and Lisa. Gene served as First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He is a sixty- year member of Pipefitters Local #539. He worked as a pipefitter and was the administrator of the Health, Welfare and Pension funds for the pipefitters and plumbers in the Twin Cities. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was loved by all and will be deeply missed.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Roney, grandson Nicholas, and sisters, Marie Nelson and Patricia Athmann.
Gene is survived by his wife Gerry, daughter Maureen (Steve) Gruenke, son Mark (Sharon) Roney, son Don (Shannon) Roney and daughter, Lisa Roney. Grandchildren: Patrick Roney, Michael (Devin) Roney, Garrett Gruenke and Mariah Gruenke, Joe Roney, Nate Roney, Dan Roney and Jake Roney, and great-grandchildren Finley Roney and Waylon Roney. Also survived by sisters, Maxine (Jerry) Flugaur, Irene King, Donna (Patrick) Kelly and brother, James (Sharon) Roney and many nieces and nephews, special friends the Cassidy and Opat families.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Monday, Oct. 17th at Gearty-Delmore Plymouth Chapel, 15800 37th Ave N. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 am Tuesday, Oct. 18th, at the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, 155 County Road, Wayzata, with visitation beginning at 10:30 am prior to Mass at the church.
Memorial donations preferred to Ascension Catholic School and St Jude Children’s Hospital.
