Eugene D. Johnson age 91, of Mpls, passed away April 19, 2023 at home with family of natural causes. Preceded in death by his loving wife Jane Halvorson (Johnson), his parents, George Johnson, Blanch Grant (Johnson), his son-in-law, Ron Meyer, three brothers, Harold, Earl, Harry and one sister, Mildred.

Gene was born and raised in Fergus Falls MN where he met the love of his life, Jane Halvorson. After high school he joined the Army, 11th Airborne Division stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky during the Korean War. Jane joined him there and they had their first child, Michael Johnson.  After 2 years of service, they moved to Minneapolis and daughter, Denise was born soon after.

Longtime member of the American Legion and VFW. He was known for his enjoyment of pull tabs and a cold beer. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Gene and Jane owned and operated three children’s shoe stores. People will always remember Junior Shoe World, with the big red fire truck in the store that kids loved to play on. The shoe stores were in Brookdale, Ridgedale and Northtown.

Gene lived at Copperfield Assisted Living for over 12 years and became famous for his guitar playing. He loved the old-time country music and would light up whenever the music started playing.

Survived by two children, Michael Johnson, Denise Meyer (Johnson), six grandchildren, Dustin, Michele, Luke, Melissa, Kristi, Jessica, and eight great grandchildren, Gavin, Wyatt, Kai, Meg, Caitlin, Brenna, Logan, London.

The funeral service is Tuesday, May 2 at Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapel. 3888 West Broadway, MN. Visitation is at 5:30pm and service at 6pm., with reception following.
